Easy Homemade Vanilla Extract Recipe

We participate in the bourbon craze and enjoy tasting the many offerings now available. Occasionally, we make a poor choice for our tastes. I admit, I was drawn in by the pretty glass bottles and thought the liquid inside matched the outside. I’m looking at you Town Branch bourbon! So instead of dumping it down the drain or giving it away to friends or family members you don’t like too much, make homemade vanilla extract!

Uses:

Cooking, baking, mixed drinks, great addition to coffee for those morning Zoom meetings (Just kidding, as far as you know! 😏)

Tools:

Sharp Knife

Glass bottle (I use the glass bottle the alcohol comes in)

Ingredients:

750 ml Choice of Alcohol (bourbon, vodka or whiskey)

6 Vanilla beans

Directions:

  1. Split vanilla beans in half with a sharp knife and scrape the sticky seeds out. Add both the seeds and pod to your choice of alcohol.

  2. Make sure alcohol is covering the vanilla beans.

  3. Label bottle with date. It can be used after three months but, for the best flavor allow it to age for at least six months.

I like to make a big bottle of homemade vanilla extract. It lasts for years and can be divided up for great gifts.
